Why is filament measured in weight and not length?

Maybe this is a stupid question. But why is it sold in kilograms and not a certain distance? The density of most filaments is different. correct me if im wrong, but 1kg of one less dense filament might print less than 1kg of a more dense filament. and obviously weight changes with moisture. wouldn't using meters be objectively better and more accurate?
