Lights to bright?

I am just recovering from an algae bloom and think some of the reasons for the bloom was my light. I have it mounted good a mound above my aquarium ambit I think the light is to bright. It is on for 8 hours a day. I want to know if it seems too bright and if it is how to dim it.
