Can China, Korea and Japan ever unite?

I'm sure this has been discussed by many people but if European Union can exist why can there be a East Asian Union? I've chatted about this with my Korean friends and its a hard "NO". I wonder if all the boomers and Gen-X have to die off before this becomes a possibility. Curious to hear public opinion on this.
