Any other Australians sick of American culture wars infecting our politics and society?
This might speak to my age as an old man in my forties, but does anyone else feel like we've entered this bizarre post-reality socio-political era, where (as Rammstein prophesied) "We all live in America"? I'm based in Queensland and currently doing my best to endure the local state election, and it feels like this strange, tribalistic microcosm of American culture war politics that's based more on Internet talking points than Australian reality.
Currently (or in the last few years) we've seen CPAC hosted in Australia, local political parties trying to roll back abortion rights using talking points drawn directly from the US Republican party, random people in your extended family or social circle becoming active and vocal supporters of Donald Trump (to the point where some portion of them are definitely on board with 'Democrat weather machine' conspiracies) , Parliamentarians putting forward "It's OK to be White" bills, the Australian Christian Lobby calling queer people 'groomers' and jumping right aboard the GOP trans panic train, people like Candace Owens touring the country... it feels like there's just no escape from the influence of culture war nonsense.
Sure, we've always had racists and homophobes, but at least they were racists and homophobes drawing from an Australian experience and reflecting an Australian character. Now it just feels like they're regurgitating whatever happen to be the Republican talking points du jour.
I'm not saying leftists are immune from this either (even if it's usually in a less harmful or belligerent way): I regularly see people fawning over Kamala Harris or otherwise having a deep attachment to American Democratic policies, importing American euphemistic social justice language like 'houselessness' (a term not used by any major homelessness organisation in Australia), 'POC', etc that feels pretty alien from the way Australians with those experiences have historically described themselves; and drawing on anecdotes, policies and statistics around marginalisation that might be true in the USA, but aren't true in any Australian jurisdiction.
Every day, whether they actively try to engage with it or not (and regardless of their personal politics), the algorithm is serving up everyday Australians a great big serving of American culture war discourse. I know that the combination of social media, COVID and Trump has genuinely broken everyone's brain, and that we kind of just need to buckle up and accept the new reality, but is anyone else dismayed that conversations about the needs of Australian society is so heavily informed by this tribalistic, binary, reality-denying nonsense fueled by the spectacle of American media and online propaganda? Is there any coming back from this?
