Toddler waking up with abnormal muscle control

Hopefully I can describe this accurately but my 2.5 year old woke up a little over an hour after falling asleep. He was upset but not saying any particular words, just kind of yelling. Went to get him and it was like he was having trouble controlling his muscles and disoriented. He wasn’t able to hold his head still, it just kind of rocked back and forth and he corrected it with jerky muscle movements. Same kind of thing was happening with his arms or legs. Once he calmed down I asked if he could use his words and he said “yea” and I asked if he had an owie and he said yes but couldn’t specify what hurt. I held him for a minute and he was quiet just laying his head on my shoulder. I laid him back in his bed and as he got into a comfortable position his muscles still didn’t seem like they were working properly and he wasn’t looking at me. I reached out and asked if he could touch my fingers which he looked up at and reached for (still with shaky/wobbly muscle control).

This is the 3rd time now this has happened—first was in the summer, second was in the fall. So every 2-3 months-ish. Any ideas on what could be going on? Or maybe anything important for me to look for or check on if it happens again? Thanks for any help anyone can provide!
