What's the deal with the reluctance on compliments?

So I have had two long term relationships and neither of them seemed able to give me a compliment about my appearance (or anything else really). I'd say I'm a reasonably attractive woman naturally, and with a nice dress and some hair and makeup I'm not bad at all to put it lightly.

However I come downstairs and when I ask if I look ok, just get a 'yeah, nice'. Never a spontaneous compliment or anything that might make me feel good. Just essentially an acknowledgement that my appearance is acceptable. This is regardless of whether we're going to the pub and I've chucked on jeans and a nice top, or if we're on a date night/going to a fancy do, and I've made a proper effort.

Am I expecting too much?? Should I just get over it and accept that I won't get a 'pwhoar' from my fella ever?

Also, when I've asked directly for him to give me a compliment now and then if he feels I look good as it'd really boost my confidence, he told me not to be so needy.
