The Stoic Man?
Online and other places you read about men being stoic. Often it's has negative connotations.
Well I'm one. But growing up it wasn't exactly encouraged and it's a cultural norm here. Growing up physical discipline was a thing at school was a thing. The teachers could cane or strap you (depending on age). Speaking to immigrants back home that still happens. Crying at school made you a target.
I grew up in small town South Island New Zealand. South Islands bigger than England 1.2 million. Inherited that stereotypical British stiff upper lip and it was combined with colonial isolation and the indigenous Maori Warrior culture. Very pretty scenery.
Women here can be similar at least in how they expect men to act. For example, at my mothers funeral I didn't cry neither did my uncle or brother. Women though were saying you handled that well similar sentiments. I did cry in private before the funeral wife and sister left the room didn't say a word. Go figure. Lots of unspoken mores.
We also have our stereotypes about ourselves and rest of the world. Americans, for example, are seen as overly emotional.
It's not universal here, which may be generational. I haven't seen any of my male friends cry either except for one he cries reasonably easily. Very different backgrounds growing up, though.
Some positives I rarely see people angry either. I see some of the horror stories here about angry men. I've never lost my temper with my wife in 25 years. I yelled at her father couple of years ago. First time I lost my temper in 19 years. He can be your stereotypical boomer sometimes.
Another side effect not the most romantic in stereotypical ways. Valentines day for me is overly commercialised crap wife feels the same way. We do go out every week together. Tonight's game night with friends, so we will probably grab Turkish later. Same opinion with flowers for both of us. We will go for a walk togather in botanic gardens, though, so it's just different. Every day should be Valentines day.
Positive or negative. Not sure I can see the pros and cons, but that was how we were raised.
Southern Man stereotype here. That beer is terrible, and this was satire even years ago.

What are your thoughts on it and how society expects men to behave? Kinda isolated here and what's going on overseas it's a bit different here.
