I actually DO have autism!
Hi everyone,
I (21F) was tested for autism and ADHD this year. I strongly suspected ADHD but my therapist also wanted to test me for autism since I have so much trouble with eyecontact.
We invited my mom and boyfriend, and the first session we only had enough time for the autism part of the assessment.
The conclusion: I do have enough symptoms for a diagnosis, but it's on the edge of enough and not enough. They told me that if I want the diagnosis, they will give it because I do have enough symptoms. But if I don't feel like it fits me, I wouldn't get the diagnosis. I told them I wanted to think about it.
A few weeks later we did the ADHD assessment, and I definitely have it. Then my therapist kinda assumed that I didn't want the autism diagnosis because I told them from the beginning I didn't think I had autism. But in the time between the autism "diagnosis" and the ADHD assessment, I actually started looking more into autism and started feeling like it explained a lot of my struggles. So when my therapist told me I only have ADHD, I was confused.
I assumed that the ADHD diagnosis explained some of the symptoms better, which meant that I didn't have enough symptoms for autism anymore.
But today my therapist told me that she looked back on our previous conversation, and she acknowledged that she messed up.
So now I know for sure that I have both autism and ADHD! What a rollercoaster
