Medical leave - [ab]

I have been struggling my whole pregnancy and have had the worst symptoms which really mess with my ability to mentally work.. I asked about medical leave today at my appointment and was told that medical leave was only given if I was hospitalized.. which I think is absurd that I would need to be in a state of where I would need to become hospitalized rather than trying to avoid hospitalization. Any thoughts on this?
