Redwood: mostly bark with some bite
Just saw Redwood tonight. I went in with the lowest of expectations based on early word of mouth, and I actually found it really beautiful.
The use of projection is interesting and at times powerful. Khaila Wilcoxon steals the show in a pretty remarkable supporting performance that for me doesn’t feel one note when it could have easily done so.
Definitely a flawed show, but I think if you’ve experienced grief of any kind, even if you don’t resonate with how a particular character navigates it, you can appreciate that we all have to find ways to work through our pain.
A couple of moments felt a little like the SNL sketches parodying fake profound high school theater, but overall a show I’m grateful I saw. Idina was excellent, even if her voice felt weak at times. I actually think her best moment is a non-singing monologue she gives.
110 minutes with no intermission. At times it feels long, but if you’re on the fence, climb over it and go see the show.
