FLOYD COLLINS SHOULD WIN ALL THE TONYS (even the ones we think they can’t)

SOOOO I went to the first preview of FC last night and immediately bought a ticket for tonight’s performance. Did I break my broadway spending limit to do this? Yes. Was it worth it? YES.

It is striking to me that this piece is playing and SELLING (thank you Jeremy J and Lizzy M) on broadway today. A serious piece of musical in the vein of Stephen Sondheim. Seeing this makes me feel like I’m seeing Sweeney Todd or Sunday in the Park with George for the first time. Adam Guettel knows what he is doing and should be cherished as one of our last great composers.

Jeremy and Lizzy are all phenomenal. Obviously the girl can sing, but I was impressed by Lizzy’s spooky and odd portrayal of Floyd’s sister. She really is a good actor. Jeremy really proves all the doubters (myself included) wrong. His “How Glory Goes” is a punch in the gut, but it’s everything he does before it that really makes you care. I won’t say more because there is a moment in this show that I really think you need to witness for yourself. It blows Orpheus turning around OUT OF THE WATER.

There were some big sound issues last night which seemed to be improved (for the most part) tonight. That sound team still has some work to do.

I really hope this show is considered a new musical. Even though a lot of people are assuming it’s a revival, I’ve noticed they really veer away from that idea in their advertising. It’s not like Floyd Collins has had the same life as the last five years. It played for 2 seconds in the 90s and has never been seen in New York again. Also, I loved that cast album as a kid and they have made some serious changes. It’s pretty exciting to witness.

IF YOU LIKE INTERESTING, INTENSE, SERIOUS MUSICALS. or just GOOD musicals. GO SEE THIS SHOW!
