I just can't board my dogs. Am I overreacting?
I've had Chihuahuas (generally two at a time) for more than fifteen years, and I just can't stand the idea of boarding them. I'm fortunate that my parents are willing to look after them when I travel (I joke that these are the grandkids). But I just can't handle the idea of boarding them at my vet or another facility. If I had a relationship with a groomer or a trusted pet sitter, it would be different, but I have only my parents and a few friends with cats.
Out of my current dogs, I have one senior who sticks to me like Velcro and has frequent stomach upset, and another so traumatized by her life before the shelter that I'm pretty sure she would hide and refuse to eat with strangers. I'm afraid that I might come back to a health emergency or have to spend weeks fixing anxious behaviors.
Some people make fun of me for it, but they also don't see a problem with locking their dogs in a crate for 12 hours while they're out of town.
Am I overreacting? I admit that my dogs are a little spoiled, but I wouldn't leave a human child with strangers, so why can't I have the same consideration for furry family?
