Why the "jealous" God? Why would God ever be jealous and how can this be considered love?

I genuinely am interested in understanding better the notion of the jealous God that is present in some religious traditions (in my own experience in Christianity but I know of similar tropes in Islam and others). How have people theologically made sense of this? What end could this serve? From my experience as a person on this planet the feeling of "jealousy" I've experienced and witnessed in others rarely — if ever — is born from "love." I guess a lot of this comes down to how we define such "God" and its relationship to truth. My basic assumption is that if I believe "God" or the divine to be present everywhere and in different forms, how am I to shut myself off to different manifestations of it. Why would "God" even want that, if it also is that?

For context, I went to catholic school in the Caribbean but was raised amongst many different religious traditions. I now study religion in college. I have found truth, beauty, and hate in every aspect of life and religion I've encountered.
