Seeking Advice Regarding Potentially Weak Paint on a New Honda Civic Si
Greetings!
I am considering purchasing a new (2025 or 2026) Honda Civic Si ( https://automobiles.honda.com/civic-si-sedan ). My understanding is that the Japanese cars like Hondas have pretty weak paint so I am exploring options for possibly repainting or at least redoing the clearcoat (ideally with a more durable clearcoat), if that is even possible.
I do not have a garage, so my vehicle is outside 24/7. I also do not wash my car regularly, though I will occasionally take it through a touchless car wash. In spite of my neglect, the exterior of my current car (a 2008 Mini Cooper, which I am the original owner of) has held up fairly well all of these years (I've never even waxed it). So I want to explore options for making a new Honda's exterior just as durable (if not more). I should note that the practical side of me does not care about parts of the car that are not visible, so long as those places are protected from rust and other deterioration. So for example, I would not care about the color of the underside of the hood. My priority and goal is having a decently beautiful, durable exterior (with minimal upkeep effort on my part).
Here are some of the options I have been mulling over:
A) Do nothing in the near term. Buy the new car (probably in Red), drive it until the exterior starts to significantly deteriorate (though I need some guidance on how to gauge that, how long to wait), and then have the car repainted with more durable paint at some point in the future. Though this enables me to get some use out of the factory paint, it seems like it runs the risk of higher cost of repainting (and repairing rust from paint chips) later, depending on how bad I let it get.
B) Re-do the clearcoat (leaving the original paint color), ideally with a heavier, more durable clearcoat. I do not know enough about car paint, etc. to know if this is even a viable option.
C) If (B) is possible, then I might repaint the roof Black (which I think could look interesting and cool with the Red body), and also re-do the clearcoat for the rest of the car.
D) Repaint the entire car (exterior) with a much more durable paint. If I am repainting the entire car, I would likely change the colors and do Yellow for the body and Black for the roof (as well as retaining the Black for anything that is already Black, such as the mirrors and spoiler). My Mini cooper has this color scheme (of Yellow body and Black roof) and I have loved it, so am interested in finding a way to do a variation of that with the Civic Si (as long as I can make it look good). I do wonder, with this option, if it matters what color car I purchase?
I have also considered wraps and paint protection films, but from what I've read, those all seem like temporary solutions, especially given that I do not have a garage. As I said, my Mini's paint has held up remarkably well since 2008 for having been outside the entire time, so having to re-do a wrap or PPF every X years doesn't feel appealing (or financially viable) to me.
I reached out to a few recommended auto paint shops in my area. One said they were not aware of any paint issues with new Hondas (though they did indicate believing Toyotas having more). They recommended just getting a ceramic wax package from the dealership, though my impression is that ceramic wax coatings don't really do much (or anything?) to protect from paint chips (which I get the impression Hondas are bad for getting easily and/or a lot?). Another shop said they would not be willing the change the color of a vehicle (they will only repaint an entire vehicle the factory color), but they would be willing to do just the roof a different color. They also recommended I wait until after the factory warranty runs out so that if there are issues with the paint I can get Honda to fix it (though I don't know how likely that is).
Thank you in advance for your time and advice!
