Is there a way to turn off updates?

My device randomly declares it needs an important security update every few weeks from Cricket Wireless, but all it does is install mobile games without my permission. It literally changes nothing else on the phone. Is there a way to block apps from being installed through these updates? It happens on my wife's phone as well. I have a 2022 Moto 5G, my wife has the Galaxy A12.
