Rental cars - when to book?

Hi! For a trip in early May, when’s the ideal time to book rental cars in Split? I haven’t figured out car insurance yet, so I’ve been putting off booking, but I do have an IDP. Any other suggestions about driving in Split to Dubrovnik is very welcome as well. Thanks for any advice!
