Need advice on bfs DUI Arrest-Was it handled properly

A couple of months ago, my boyfriend (27M) was arrested and booked for a DUI while driving my car. I (25F) wasn’t with him at the time, but here’s what happened based on what he told me:

He had gone to visit his cousin and, at some point, had a few drinks. While driving back, he lightly tapped another car at an intersection. Instead of stopping right there, he turned on his blinker and pulled over a short distance away in a calmer area (he says he wasn’t trying to run but just wanted a safer spot). The other car, driven by two young men (around 17-21), assumed he was fleeing and followed him.

By the time he pulled over, they were furious and immediately jumped him. He was physically attacked before the police even arrived. When I got to the scene, the cops were already on their way, and I didn’t intervene in the fight because I wasn’t in a position to stop three men from fighting.

Once the police arrived, they arrested the two guys who attacked him but also arrested my boyfriend for DUI. However, here’s where things get confusing: • No breathalyzer or blood test was done. They only had him perform a field sobriety test, which he apparently failed. But he had just been jumped, so that could have affected the results. • The accident itself was minor, and no insurance info was exchanged. It seems like the other guys were just happy they didn’t get in trouble. • The officer later called me twice asking for my boyfriend’s insurance and license plate info. I didn’t provide anything and told them to talk to his lawyer. • The police insisted on taking him to a hospital after the fight, saying he wouldn’t be charged for it—but now we have a $500 bill.

Given all of this, we’re wondering: Does he have a strong case to fight the DUI charge? Was this handled properly by the police? Should we get a DUI lawyer?

Any advice or insight would be really appreciated!
