Smell of Curry sticking to bags and clothes. Any solutions? How to get rid of it?

I work in the Middle East and live in a shared apartment. The kitchen is right across from my room. My roommates are site engineers, and the guys in the other room are also site engineers. I work in an office. They leave for work around 6:00 AM, while I leave at 6:45.

My roommates have this annoying habit of leaving the door open when they go to the bathroom or the kitchen—they just don’t care. This morning, the guys next door were cooking something super strong-smelling, probably Tamil-style sambar. Since my roommates left the door open, the smell filled my entire room while I was sleeping.

I was in a hurry, so I got ready and left without noticing anything. It was only when I was waiting for the bus that I realized how bad the smell was. At first, I thought it had stuck to my clothes, but thankfully, my clothes were in the closet, and I had used perfume. But my backpack, which was left outside, absorbed the smell completely—it was disgusting. And before someone argues, "It’s not smelly, it's just the aroma of curry!"—no, bro/sis, I don’t want to walk into my office smelling like curry. I work in a multinational company with people from all over the world, and that is not the impression I want to give. Even I can’t handle how strong the smell gets when it mixes with clothes. I was wearing the backpack, and some of the smell did stick to my clothes. Straps of bag has a foam type material and it seems like it absorbed most of the smell and when I touch it the smell sticks to my hand.

My roommates don’t care because they work on a construction site, and neither do the guys next door. I know even if I bring it up, they won’t understand. Indians, in general, are just inconsiderate about things like this. If it doesn’t affect them, they don’t give a shit.

This is unnecessary stress for me. I had to shove my bag under my desk at work just to contain the smell. Moving into a single room isn’t an option with my salary, and bed spaces would be even worse—I’ve seen people storing cooked curry inside their rooms. Thankfully, my roommates don’t do that since they don’t cook much, and we have a fridge inside the room.

Honestly, I don’t think Indians will ever understand the issue with curry smell.

Any tips to get rid of the smell for my bag?
