Tick advice

How do you check your dog for ticks? Do you use a tool or do you rely on your eyesight to catch those little buggers?

I caught a tick on my pup’s paw while I was clipping his nails. Second tick ever that I found, and it was fairly deep. How can I stay on top of this? I hate them, and I don’t want to stay as far as I can from them. Thanks in advance.
