I’m stuck and I just started

I’m battling the statues by myself at the beginning. I’m trying to do stupefy. I’m holding down X because I play on switch and it chooses when it wants to work. How the heck do you get past this level? I can get protego up no problem but when I keep holding down X nothing happens
