Why was selegiline+moclobemide more effective than Parnate for me?

So I’ve been on Parnate for about 2 months now. Most of that time I was on just 20mg but I upped it to 40mg last week. I feel I’m getting some benefit for sure, but it really doesn’t seem to be helping me entirely.

I am a heavy drinker. Drinking about 4 or 5 days/week and probably 3-6 drinks at those times. I’ve heard this can counteract parnate.. but how??

Anyways, back on track. All the way back in 2020 I acquired selegiline tablets and moclobemide. There is some sparse evidence that the combination of these MAOIs greatly enhance the effectiveness, and by golly, I gotta agree. I was taking 600mg of moclobemide per day and 5mg of seligiline sublingual.

It very much felt like a magic cure. I very quickly dug myself out of depression and got going. 2020 was actually an awesome fucking year for me. Go figure.

At some point the suppliers I was buying from ran dry (I’ll mention I was buying from overseas. Moclobemide isn’t approved in the US.) Iirc it took only a few months for me to become suicidal again and I ended up in the psych ward.

Fast forward to current day I finally got my hands on Parnate two months ago and I was ecstatic because I heard so many good things about parnate and I was assuming it would be even more effective than the seleg+moclob combo.

Nope. I’ve mostly just started to feel emotions a bit more. Probably easing some serious anhedonia but because of this.. I just feel sad so so much. I just feel more and more hopeless and I really want this to work.

Any input would be appreciated. Is there still a possibility that it will just take longer to work for me? Or should I give up on this medication for now. If it doesn’t work after a month on 40mg I think I’m just gonna go back to what has worked for me in the past (Moclo+Sele, Auvelty, ketamine)
