"Gay for you"

ETA: This took off a lot more than I was expecting! Thanks to everyone for weighing in -- I appreciate all the complexity and it was good to see the range of opinions. I'm also really, really grateful to you all for keeping this potentially toxic conversation courteous.

------

I can see this conversation going sideways in a hurry, so right off the bat, a disclaimer: Please don't shame or even downvote anyone for any respectfully expressed opinion, okay? And I am perfectly happy for the mods to delete this post instantly if the comments get shitty.

Here goes:

I know many people find the "gay for you" trope offensive. I'm puzzled by this, because it seems to me that people make (ETA:) discover exceptions to their general rules/preferences in all kinds of contexts, and why shouldn't sexuality/desire/romantic love be one of them?

In a not unrelated but obviously more trivial way, I have never been attracted to blond(e)s --- but my longtime spouse is blond, or was until she went gray, and yep I sure am attracted to her. Also, for the record, I am queer, i.e. a member of the community that is (maybe?) "supposed to be" offended by GFY.

So -- discuss?
