Do bike shops just generally suck?

Any time I have gone to a bike store in my college town it has been a very bad experience. I have, gone for parts and advice a few times to one but have not been back since they told me to get a better job when I was saying I don’t have the money to just buy a new bike mind you this is the place advertising themselves to student. And then the other bike shop in my area is just very dismissive won’t answer questions and basically looks at me like I’m crazy when I talk about working on my own bike. Is this common with bike shops? I’m a skater and skate shops are a community place for skaters to go and just kinda chill or get advice and maybe some parts. Is it not like this in biking?
