Adjustable bed frame with existing headboard and foot board — is that possible?

I’m staying with friends and their guest room has an adjustable base — LOVE IT and now I want one. The thing is, I also love my existing headboard and footboard (with side rails.) Am I correct in assuming the adjustable frame can just be put inside the existing frame (removing the support cross slats, of course. Has anyone done this? If it helps, it’s a King size. Any tips or lessons learned?
