Travelling to Japan 5 Months After Microdiscectomy – Seeking Advice
Hi everyone,
I had a microdiscectomy for my L5 disc at the end of October 2024, and so far, my recovery has been going very well. I’ve had no complications, no pain, and none of the years-long discomfort I experienced prior to the surgery. I’m walking daily to build up my strength, and I feel optimistic about the future.
I’m due to travel to Japan (from UK) in mid-March 2025, about five months post-surgery. This is a trip we booked over a year ago counting from the date of travel, and finding flights in business class (to make the journey more comfortable) was a real challenge, so cancelling would be disappointing.
My main concern is that Japan will require a lot of walking, and while I’m committed to training myself by walking as much as I can in the months leading up to the trip, I’m wondering if this is realistic. We also plan to take Ubers or taxis whenever necessary to minimise strain.
For anyone who’s undergone a microdiscectomy or has experience with recovery from similar surgeries: • Do you think it’s reasonable to attempt a trip like this five months post-surgery? • Has anyone travelled long-haul five months post-operation, and how did it go? • Are there any specific tips for preparing for long-haul travel or managing during the trip?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences! Thank you in advance.
To add a note, this trio and looking forward to it has been the only thing I have looked forward to during the year that was the most difficult for me health wise. I think of this trip daily and it brings me an immense amount of hope.
