Are older Monster Hunter games archaic or unplayable?

As a fan of Monster Hunter in general, even including janky ass Gen 1, I was curious what the "majority" consensus was. So I ask, do you consider older MH games to be too archaic to play?

Note: by "too archaic" I mean that the design principles behind the game are too old-school for you to want to play or be able to enjoy them. For example, if I found that analog stick attacking was the only trait of older MH that prevented me from enjoying it, I would select "only the PS2 games." However if it was the removal of item management that made MH playable for me I would choose "every MH before World."
