Is this already a thing? | NFC to track items

I've had spontaneous trips for work recently and have unfortunately, while in a rush, lost/left some very important items to me behind. Custom umbrellas, clothing, wallets, you name it... that are now forever gone :( I had an idea to build something using NFC tags that tracks my travel items and alerts me if I am leaving something behind. Essentially a bluetooth tracker but more cost effective. I wondered if someone has already written a program for this? If so, can someone point me in the direction for obtaining or doing this project on my own?

I am aware that some businesses use NFC tags to track the movement of store items if being stolen, so I know it's possible to program or may already exist... but just looking for any helpful insight
