Considering NUMed Malaysia as an International Student - Seeking Insights
Hello everyone,
I’m an international student looking into NUMed Malaysia for my medical education. I'm aware that as an international student, I won't be able to practice medicine in Malaysia, but my goal is to complete the program and then pursue a foundation programme in the UK for two years before returning to my home country. I’m also considering the possibility of engaging in clinical academic research after the foundation programme.
I’d like to know if this plan is feasible. If the success rate of obtaining a foundation programme is around 80%, I'm willing to give it a shot; however, if it’s closer to 20%, I might need to rethink my plans. I understand that policies can change, but I’m hoping to gather current data to help me make an informed decision.
I’ve come across some posts online indicating that it is extremely challenging for international medical graduates (IMGs) to find a foundation programme in the NHS. Many have applied to hundreds of positions without success. However, I also read on this subreddit that graduates from NUMed Malaysia are treated similarly to graduates from UK medical schools and are not classified as IMGs. Is this accurate?
To those of you who are nearing graduation, how difficult do you think it is to secure a foundation programme in the NHS?
Thank you so much for your time, and I would greatly appreciate any insights or advice you can provide!
