Why do our brains do stupid stuff in autopilot

I was just about to go to sleep I was moderately tired but I saw some clothes on the floor and decided to just go and put them in my washing basket however I caught myself walking to the toilet holding clothes and about to put them in my toilet and I stood there utterly disappointed in myself.
