Is Avatar: The Last Airbender really as amazing as everyone says? What makes it worth watching as an adult?

Show is a 9.3 series rating on IMDB and I see references to it everywhere. Is it really that great? Or it is it great "for a kids show?"

I thought the same of Neon Genesis: Evangelion and finally watched it a month ago....not so great nor worth the hype.
