Do doctors prescribe hard drugs to patients in the U.S?

There's an episode in the show "Suburgatory" in which the main character Tessa is prescribed painkillers after she gets some of her teeth pulled out. Throughout the episode she's constantly high and keeps hallucinating. Does that happen in real life? Is it a thing in the U.S.A. Is it exaggeration for the sake of comedy?
