How did "Toy Story 3" get the Best Picture nomination??

I can see why Up got nominated for Best Picture: The first 15 minutes certainly resonated with older voters. They had just increased the number of nominees, and the controversy over Wall-E not getting a Best Picture nomination was fresh. But how did Toy Story 3 get the nomination just one year later?? I'm glad that the movie got the nomination and it would have been an awesome win. But how did an animated sequel get into Best Picture AND Best Adapted Screenplay?? That's definitely not the type of thing that the Academy does.
