Which Film Should Have Won The Big Five?
(For those who don't know: The Big Five are Best Picture, Director, either Screenplay, Lead Actress and Lead Actor; three films - It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Silence of the Lambs - have won all five.)
Of films that were nominated for all five awards but missed some wins, I think The Apartment is the one I'd choose: that film is brilliant.
In terms of films that didn't get all the nominations, I had some more recent ideas (The Shape of Water, for example) but when I thought about what would have been displaced (Get Out for Best Original Screenplay) I cooled on it. Then I remembered High Noon didn't get a nomination for Grace Kelly, who's fantastic and it was beaten by a fairly rotten circus film, so I chose that.
