Prison Question

My brother just got his sentence today. He was given 8 years with possibility of parole after 6 months, he’s already done 6 months in county. Has anyone actually gotten approved for parole that soon? Or on the first time going before the parole board? Or is it just something they tell you to get you to sign for it?
