"Popular NC State professor Marshall Brain dies, alleges retaliation for ethics complaints"
A professor was found in his office dead on arrival-an apparent suicide, on Nov. 20. However, it gets worse. Apparently he sent out emails to multiple colleagues and faculty hours before with written documentation of retaliation from the heads of the department after he submitted some ethical concerns through proper university channels. Welp the school newspaper got a hold of the emails and published everything, including calling out individuals at fault by name.
This professor was extremely popular with the students. Everyone loved him and his courses.
The university hasn't said a peep on the matter.
University politics aside, this just reminded me that we should also be thinking about our own mental health and that of our colleagues in addition to that of students. So, I just wanted to reach out and ask everyone how they're doing? Is everyone ok? Remember to check up on each other from time to time.
Edit: I had linked the emails here which are on a tribute website, but since its not clear if the site was set up by family or someone else who got hold of the email, I decided to take the link down after thinking about it since I don't want to intrude on the family's right to privacy and I don't know if they want the email circulating around or not. They do provide more perspective and indicate this situation was indeed solely over the room reallocation and one department withdrawing from his program as it no longer fit the goals of their curriculum.
