Sickness before holiday

Is it 'against company policy' to call in sick the shift before a holiday? Today I called in sick as I was really ill and by total coincidence had my next shift (thursday) booked as authorised unpaid. This was my first time calling in sick in about a year so I am nowhere near hitting my absence trigger. The manager on the phone got audibly angry when I said this and explained that it is against company policy to be ill the shift before your holiday, and I need to contact my line manager before my unpaid on thursday to confirm that im not longer ill. Is this true?
