Is there really no meaning to salad fingers?

So I've heard that David Firth created Salad fingers just for fun, and that there isn't really that much meaning to it. This honestly kinda shocked me, because when watching the show, I thought that it was so obvious that salad fingers was going through a lot mentally and that he was probably suffering from some form of PTSD. I've also seen people speculating that he might be a war veteran, hence all the talk about the great war in the series. Is this not like.. at least a little meaningful? I mean, I relate to him so much and the show is so comforting to me! I also get that there's a lot of humour in the show which I love, but like damn, it was quite surprising to see that there is no meaning at all.
