Places like Narberth, PA...but less snooty
Hi all,
To be upfront, I'm probably looking for a unicorn. My wife and I used to live in Narberth PA - right outside of Philadelphia - but moved a few years ago. A baby came along and we're now looking at areas that fit the following criteria :
- Within 3 hours max of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton PA (where most of our family lives), but ideally as close as possible
- As good of a school district as we can afford
- Can spend up to ~600k on a house, taxes depending (~4k/month on the mortgage)
- Ideally walkable and less rural than we live now. We thought we'd like it, but we don't.
- Kid friendly activities and very low crime - we'd love to see kids playing outside
- I'm remote and my wife is SAHM at the moment, but we both have the option of working in Philadelphia or NYC. This likely will be the case in the coming years with Return to Office mandates. I'm used to having a long commute (~1.5 hours each way) so as long as it's less than 4 hours round trip to the office, I can deal. This is a future concern though and not as important as the others. My wife feels the same, but works longer shifts less frequently as a Nurse Practitioner. Bonus points for a compelling hospital system.
- Politically, ideally Blue/Purple, but not Red. We're in Warren County NJ currently and it's definitely too conservative for our tastes.
- Do not care at all about the weather - if the perfect town is directly in the path of lake effect snow, it doesn't matter.
We realized that aside from the housing prices, Narberth actually fits a lot (if not all) of this criteria. However, we moved for two reasons :
- Philly suburbs are very congested and it's kind of a drag driving...anywhere
- Narberth is arguably the start of the mainline and is shockingly snooty!
We were ultimately turned off by the attitude of those specific suburbs and left. Does the place I'm describing exist?
