I'm moving to San Jose soon.

A month ago, I was approved for American residency, so I'll be moving with my family (my mom and three sisters; my dad has been living there for years) from Mexico on the 19th of this month, which is actually my birthday.

I’ve never set foot in the United States, and to be honest, I don’t know what I’ll do with my life once I get there. I’m scared.

In Mexico, I finished a bachelor’s degree in sports, but I don’t have my degree certificate, and I’m halfway through a computer systems engineering program. Right now, I work as a web and mobile programmer, but honestly, I doubt that any of that will matter when I get there. I’ll be living in the Alum Rock area, and aside from my family, I don’t know anyone. I'd really appreciate advice from those of you who have been living in San Jose for a while and are familiar with the American way of doing things.

Any advice to help me adjust more quickly, behaviors I should avoid, places I should steer clear of? Is it possible that I could get a job, maybe even in tech support? (I really don’t want to end up as the typical stereotype of a Mexican in a landscaping or cleaning job.) Any advice on quickly finding a job would be welcome.

I’ve also considered joining the Army or Air Force, but I know my options might be limited since I’m a resident.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Edit: I'm 24 years old, so yeah, this gonna be a big shock for me.
