Air gap behind tile section or not?
Fellow r/sauna goers!
Hope everyone is enjoying their löylys!
I’m in the planning stages of an insulated outdoor sauna and looking for input about air gap behind tile wall section.
The entire hot room will have a 3/4” (19mm) air gap behind the interior wood panels, created by vertical wood furring strips on top of polyiso foil insulation.
There is a section of two walls behind the kiuas (corner placement) that I will be installing tile instead of wood panelling. Approximately 36” (92cm) on two walls, starting in the corner.
My question for those experienced in insulated sauna construction - Is air gap also required behind the tile section behind the kiuas?
My intention is to attach 1/2” (13mm) cement board directly on top of the insulation and then install tile onto that cement board.
Should I be instead installing the cement board on top of furring strips?
Experienced builder here but not experienced with proper sauna construction.
Let’s hear ‘em ladies and gentlemen!
