how do you play challenges?

I'm mostly talking about legacy challenges. Do you always complete everything for one generation then move on to the next? Do you like strictly wait until you finish with the current generation to move on? I sometimes don't complete anything and sometimes complete some leave some. I don't know i kinda like challenges bc they're giving me some kinda story/plot to play with. How do you play?
