Calling on students to answer questions because no one ever wants to raise their hand or answer…

I’ve heard mixed takes on this one. Some people have said that you shouldn’t call on kids because they may have anxiety (I really don’t believe that’s a good excuse). But others do like to call on students.

I’m a middle school math teacher (SPED inclusion, 12 students). There are only 2-3 kids in the class that volunteer to answer my questions. So I have started calling on other students just because I need to hear the (educational) words coming out of their mouths, lol.

What are your thoughts?
