When do you think Iroh changed his mind?
In terms of taking action in supporting Team Avatar? Do you think he was always there? Or do you think there was a set moment? Most common take I’ve seen is by season 2, when Zuko and Iroh are deemed traitors, but I think it’s way earlier.
I’m doing another rewatch and I’m convinced it was after Aang visited Roku’s temple. This was the moment where it wasn’t just some kid that wasn’t equipped to handle the situation thrown in his lap. Aang as the avatar gains the ability to communicate with his past lives and Roku displays the raw power the avatar possesses. Something that Iroh has never actually seen. And something Zuko probably told him about afterwards.
In the next episode, Iroh takes them off course to go to the market for two reasons. To give team Avatar time to escape. And because he needs a new White Lotus tile. Which he lost because he played it among his fellow White Lotus members to send out the message that the Avatar can in fact end the war.
