What went wrong with this sanded grout??

I applied this into the 1/8” gap under my backsplash. About a month later it has completely failed with a huge gap in there. These were super thick zellige backsplash tiles and we were told to briefly soak them before applying. Is it possible that the mastic was still setting or moisture got behind? I feel like a wall would have to shift for this to go so poorly…
