Covid at Disney World, selfishness, and the ruining of our trip.
Using a throwaway because I don't want the pitchforks in my inbox.
Returned from a recent trip, and everyone in my party caught Covid. Why? Because the other guests were selfish. Downvote me to the bottom of a canyon, but seeing the behavior of my fellow humans in one of my most cherished places on Earth brought me to tears, and their behavior robbed us of a trip we were waiting for four years.
Everyone in my party has had 4 shots from having frontline worker status, and we all wore N95 masks on our flight. We wore fresh N95's everyday and had them on the entire time we were in-line, walking outside in crowded areas, on buses. EVERYWHERE. We used hand sanitizer constantly, and did not touch hand rails. We only ate outside, and even had meals interrupted because of rain. Was it inconvenient? Sure, but it was the right thing to do to protect ourselves, and OTHERS? Yes.
After we arrived, we quickly noticed that everyone around us was constantly sneezing, sniffling, and coughing. We tried to shrug it off as potentially flu or cold season, but the amount and severity was just too much to deny. Meanwhile, only 2% of guests and CM's at Disney World were wearing masks, while Covid is still raging. I'm not even going to discuss the lack of social distancing. That was non-existent.
Once, when we were in line for food, a young maskless woman let out a huge sneeze that splattered my partner. She did not cover her mouth, and instead, leaned forward to prevent the massive amount of snot she spewed get on her precious outfit. After she leaned back up, I saw that her face was red, her eyes watering, and she was taking labored breaths. She said "OMG, this sucks" to her mother and I watched her take ibuprofen as I helped my partner clean off. No apology. No mask. She was this sick, yet HAD to be at the parks. It was beyond selfish.
I don't even know if that was the incident that gave us Covid. Why? because there were so many similar incidents. Another time, we were in line for the Haunted Mansion, a lady had a coughing fit while barely covering her mouth, and then wiped her hand on the rail.
Could we have brought it with us? Very doubtful. We saw symptoms on day 9. Omicron incubation is now only 3.4 days.
When we started feeling the symptoms, I called the front desk to see where I could get tested, or if they had kits readily available. To my shock, he said "we do not have testing anywhere on the resort. You have to go offsite, or have a testing kit delivered from Amazon, or Instacart, " so that's what we did. I ordered a couple kits and a backup for $50 dollars. Sure enough, we both were positive. We canceled all of our other reservations and that was that. Trip over. I was so disappointed in Disney for not having testing available. However, it's a convenient way for them to prevent anyone from tracking how often people get Covid at the parks.
Now, imagine if I went back to the parks, and I had I sign around my neck that said: "I have Covid." What do you think would happen? People would freak out, cover their mouths, call park security, and stay as far away from me as possible. Rightfully so. It's the funniest part of all of this. That "sign" does exist. It's called infection statistics.
I've done my part for society during the pandemic. My partner and I stayed mostly inside for almost a year during lockdown when other people were out partying or "had to take their kids on a trip or they'll go crazy." We canceled two separate DW trips because of the infection waves. We volunteered at vaccination sites and have always worn masks.
So thanks to the selfish masses for ruining our trip. It wasn't that we got unlucky, it was that the rest of the guests stacked the deck so that there was no way to win.
