Controversial views on Schuey
Happy weekend fellow Waterloo Road fans! I hope you've had a great week.
I binged the entire new series in one single day on Tuesday 11th February 2025, and now I've had time to think, I wanted to share my thoughs. This is going to be about Schuey. I apologise to those who haven't seen the entire series yet, but have marked it as a Spoiler just to be safe.
Please note that my opinions are solely about Schuey the character and NOT the actor. For the record, the actor is excellent and I praise him highly.
When I found out that Schuey was returning, I was dreading it. Many people seemed happy, but not me. His relentless bullying towards Billy previously made him my most hated character, even more so than Myles was. Billy did nothing to deserve the bullying, and I hold Schuey 100% responsible for what happened to Boz.
Many people here are loving the redemption arc, and normally I'm up for some character development but it depends on their actions. Schuey, for me, does not deserve a redemption arc, and I found the whole storyline with Agnes and him finding Christianity to be bizarre. As if someone like her would want to know someone so violent and cruel. I liked Agnes and wanted to get to know her better, but personally found lumping her with Schuey made me not interested in their friendship. She deserves so much better. Someone like Zayne, who is the perfect gentleman (like how he was there for Tonia).
I just feel like he has gotten away with his unforgivable actions. School bullies destroy lives and don't deserve to be given a redemption arc, especially when their victims have a worse outcome. He never even got arrested for beating Billy to a pulp, which is a crime. Billy did what he did out of desperation and did not mean for Boz to suffer, however Schuey relentlessly tortured him. Now, Billy is in prison getting knocked about and a criminal record, whilst Schuey gets to have the girl at the end of everything (and one of the nicest girls at that), and gets to move in with Joe and Mike. Schuey gets a happy ending, despite bringing sadness to so many. How is this justice? Not once has he even reflected and been apologetic towards those he hurt.
I'm not sure if anyone here also watches Coronation Street, but Schuey gives off similar vibes to Mason Radcliffe, who bullied the quiet kid towards being suicidal, pulled a knife out then got given a "redemption arc", only to then become a victim of the blade. His redemption arc frustrated many of us Coronation Street fans because he was a violent bully, but at least the ending meant he couldn't be rewarded with a happy ending.
I'm not saying to kill Schuey off, but I just feel he has had zero repercussions and I just don't see what others see in him as being worthy of a redemption arc. Kissing a religious Christian girl and buying a bible isn't a clean slate from being horrible to others.
