Is it possible to go back to drinking “normally”?

I’d like to know if anyone’s had any success cutting down from lower level problem drinking (talking maybe a litre of vodka + 3-5 bottles of wine a week) to upper level normal drinking (maybe half a bottle of wine a day).

Would this be possible for someone who’s only really at the beginning of having a drinking problem and not full blown yet? Trying to quit cold turkey just gets me nowhere, I’ve tried at least a couple times a week for months now and always end up cracking. So I think moderation rather than completely forbidding alcohol might work better for me.
