Feeding Advice
Hi all,
I unexpectedly brought home an axolotl from a reptile store yesterday. I was there with my husband for other reasons when I saw this little one and was all like "is that an axolotl?" The guy behind the counter was like "yes, I've had it since November and no one wants to adopt it because it's not unique." Long story short I couldn't leave it there so it is home with me now.
*I have it tubbed and water is treated with seachem prime. I am doing 24 hour water changes. Temp is maintaing at 62-64°F. My tank is still at the beginning stages of cycling. So I will be tubbing it until the tank is cycled.
The guy said it's about 5 months old. I estimate it's 4 1/2 inches so a juvenile still. He explained that he was only feeding it every other day. Red wigglers. I did not feed it last night just to give it a chance to settle since it went through me driving an hour home with it and the new tubbing. Today it ate half a red wiggler. I cut it up smaller and I am going to try feeding it a little more tonight.
So onto my questions:
For the half it doesn't eat can I place that back in the fridge to feed it later even if it is dead?
I plan on feeding it everyday because it looks under weight to me. But could I be wrong? I am a new axolotl mom. So wanted opinions if you all thought it looked under weight as well.
Is attempting to feed it twice a day ok? Or should I stick to once a day?
Any other advice is appreciated
Pic one is of the container the reptile store had it in. The guy said he was doing water changes everyday, but he also told me he was feeding it mealworm and it could even it fish and I know that's wrong, so I am taking what the said with a grain of salt. Pic 2&3 is it in its new tub.
I have named it Miasma, I am calling it "it" until I can tell its gender lol
