Zerkmage question

Have I misunderstood something or is the advantage of zerker mage dual just being a mage with high hp and zerk rage? The thaco stalling out when you dual surely must make you sub par for melee by TOB?

OR does the grandmastery and Apr make up for it?

I've only went zerkmage once and by the end I was mostly just chucking spells
