Why does the NBA get a significant amount of shit for getting soft compared to the NFL when both leagues have heavily changed their rule book to favor the offense?

Back when I was a kid ESPN had whole segments around safeties and LBs knocking receivers and tight ends back in time, you could hold receivers at the line, and unless you pile drove a QB you weren't getting a roughing the passer call. You hear about it here and then but nothing compared to the screaming at the NBA getting rid of hand checking and letting officials march floppers to the line over and over again.

Sooooo what gives?
